In a 30 minute conversation with Embraer's EVP New Programs for Airline Markets, Mauro Kern we discuss the e-195X, the turboprop idea, the shifting sands in the ~100 seat market, competition and new technologies. As pioneers in creating a successful 100-seat commercial jet, Embraer could be thought as working on their next generation. Besides reacting to the competition, Embraer is in the great position as understanding this market very well. Mr Kern talks about the emerging technologies that are likely to drive their thinking - new engines of course, but also the development of what they already have in the e-jets - a sort of "smarter plane". One that can exploit new ATC; but communicating with not only ATC, but also its owners and other airplanes. Though Embraer is thought to be behind the pack in this segment, you get the distinct impression they are actually far ahead - revising what they already know of this segment.
